Transport is Europe’s hardest emissions challenge.
According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), transport is responsible for approximately 29% of the European Union’s total greenhouse gas emissions as of 2022 — and it is the only major economic sector in Europe where overall emissions have not fallen since 1990.
Private cars remain the dominant source of urban congestion, noise, and air pollution. A shift toward public transport — metro, tram, bus, and regional rail — is one of the most direct tools available to individuals and cities to reduce their environmental impact.
The good news is that decades of policy effort are working. Between 1990 and 2022, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions from transport across the EU-27 fell by 58%, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) declined by 51%. These reductions are largely attributable to tighter emission standards and the transition to cleaner vehicle technology — and public transport has played a central role.

Making public transport the obvious choice.

Despite the significant reductions in air pollutant emissions achieved since 1990, transport remains a major environmental challenge for Europe. The EEA projects that, with current and planned policies, transport greenhouse gas emissions will fall by approximately 14% by 2030 and 37% by 2050 compared to 2022 levels — well short of the European Green Deal’s 90% reduction target for 2050.
Reaching that target will require a substantial shift in how people and goods move. Public transport — urban rail, metro, tram, and bus — will play a central part. So will the companies and platforms that make these services easier to access.
