Above ground, a dense web of commuter and urban rail lines operated by Japan Railways (JR) and a number of private companies links districts within the city and extends far into the wider metropolitan area. The Yamanote Line, a circular JR line, is particularly central for moving between major hubs without changing trains. They are particularly useful for traveling between Ueno, Asakusa, and the Tokyo Skytree, or for navigating the more relaxed residential areas of the "low city" (Shitamachi).
Tram Network
Tokyo maintains one last remaining streetcar line: the Tokyo Sakura Tram (Toden Arakawa Line). It runs on a 12.2km route through northern and eastern Tokyo, connecting Waseda to Minowabashi.
